🦋 Personality
- Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic? Selene never believed in magic before she was turned into a vampire. She's always been practical, which set her apart from her family. She hated the idea of superstition, never seeing the point of it. When she was turned, she realized these things do exist, she still looks on the supernatural with practicality. This isn't magic, but just special skills someone can do, like music or athletics. It's more talent than anything mystical. She's also aware that there might be more things that pop up for her, that she thought was superstition, but will have admit exist. It's just going to be accepted and filed away in a reasonable manner. She does use what other people might call "magic", but very stubbornly, she will not label it as such. She can do a little necromancy, which obviously isn't magic. It's like speaking another language.
- What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Out of any mythological creature, Selene would want to be a hu hsien, but this answer could change on the day she's asked. She doesn't know very much about fox spirits, but she doesn't know that foxes mean wisdom and she's tried to rely on that for most of her life. She doesn't want fancy, she wants to work and rely on herself. On top of this, she has a lot of guilt for the people she's hurt or killed over the years. It doesn't atone for what's she's done, but she wants to at least have some balance by helping people. The two biggest examples being when she worked as a cop in Phoenix, then later joining Joshua to save the vampires targeted by Esau.
- If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why? Selene would ask for unlimited wishes. She's a gambler and she'd be betting on those no consequences. Plus, she's heard of the genie loophole before, and she's not going to limit herself. What she won't do is wish for someone dead to be brought to life or to stop being a vampire or wipe her slate clean. What's done is done. She'd also never wish for her enemies to die, as she believes in handling her business herself. Everything else would be superficial wishes. New clothes, a new phone, laptop, maybe even stuff for producing and editing video streams. She'd like a good set of games and set up her own Twitch profile. Selene's perpetually online, so she'd want to feed that addiction.
- What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why? Selene's siren song would be "Dirty & Clean" by Stephanie Schneiderman. The lyrics speak to her and she's a sap for melodramatic songs that reflect her ennui. She heard it outside of Phoenix, after the city was destroyed, and it pops up in her head all the time. Oddly, it doesn't make her depressed but nostalgic. It reminds her of those days in Phoenix (but never the destruction because she doesn't want to focus on that.) It's only good times, when she'd drive back to her lair, hurrying to beat the dawn, and tired after working hard. It was the first time in her life that she felt like she accomplished something, it also was the first time she was gainfully employed. Every time else, she'd gamble or leech off her sister, before then, as a human woman, she couldn't work. It made Phoenix sweeter for her.
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why. It would either be her sisters or Joshua. Despite how apart Selene feels from her sisters, she helped take care of them from when they were young. Most of her immortal life has involved them in some way, especially as Diana was a long time travel partner. It's ironic though, because Selene would argue that her sisters need her protection, so that's why she'd follow them into a new realm. In reality, she's been saved more often by Diana. Nearly every time she's had a fight, she's ended up badly hurt. Diana has either looked after her or pulled her from being killed. A fight has never turned out so well that Selene can fully manage on her own. Also, after her mental snaps, she relies on the comfort of Diana to help pull her back. It's why Selene travels with her. She's comforted by Diana's presence and feels a bit more in control around her. Diana has a bit more of a foot in humanity and society, and Selene is afraid, if she's really alone, she'd end up a monster, waiting in its lair. True, she's got wifi, but Diana actually gets her out in the world, around people.
- Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react? Not well. She's been working to protect fledgling vampires, those viewed as broken or sinful, find a place of safety and protection. Going home hundreds of years later will leave her uncertain what might have happened to her group. Were they killed by Esau? Did they manage without her? And in the time she was gone, how many others were killed that she might have saved or helped? It would make her feel guilty and angry, that she might have "allowed" herself to fall into another realm, as though it were her fault. Her sisters and Joshua might be missing or dead as well, which means she'd be by herself, susceptible to her worst impulses, as well as her madness. She'd likely snap either upon arriving back and discovering how long she's been gone or a few hours later, when she can't manage to get ahold of Joshua or her sisters. There wouldn't be anyone to pull her out of her madness, meaning that she might stay like that for a long time, either until it wears off or she's killed. Either way.
Her lack of acceptance in "magic" largely comes from her frustrations as a child, having a dreamy family that believed in these types of things. Their father was obsessed with mythology and their mother claimed she saw things. When Artemis, Selene's sister, started acting that way, Selene was just done with it all. She wants to guide her life by some sense of order, but given she's a Malkavian, known for madness, she's just going to insist on reason from other things. This is probably why most of her Disciplines are physical or run in line with traditional vampire skills (for example, going invisible.)
Fairies would be a sharp surprise, as Selene's daughter, Eve, would always claim to see them. She'll react to their presence rather than magic itself. She'll stubbornly hold herself to some order, especially in a world she can't control. Never ever does she want to turn into her parents or child. character most like to be?
Selene would probably identify more with a Pooka. Her murder of her children haunts her, more than any other murder she's committed. She'd look at the pooka, how it lures children into a sense of safety before charging off the side of a cliff, and she'd see a parallel to her own actions. In the height of her madness, just after she was turned, she went back to her home and entranced her son, having him kill their family. She knows that she's responsible and she hurt her own children. It happened in a moment of chaos and confusion, something she's afraid of, hence her desire to control and base her life on reason.
There isn't much different between what she identifies with and what she's afraid of becoming, but Selene would be afraid of becoming Baba Yaga. It would be a mythological creature, Selene would argue, whose features match her insides. A hideous hag that feeds on children. Deep down, she fears reflecting the monster that she is inside. She's fed on her children, now including Eve, in her recent canon point. Because of this, she feels hideous and cruel. Baba Yaga would be like holding a mirror to her face. A polka and a Baba Yaga aren't different in action, but a polka can at least disguise itself and appear more appealing to others. A Baba Yaga can only be as it is.
In a moment of tenderness, she might wish for her sisters to be happy, but she's not sure what that looks like beyond the material. She also wouldn't want to perfume about how they're feeling, not without talking to them first.
Secretly, she'd ask for the family that has passed find peace. She doesn't believe in any god or religion, after being connected to a cult, so there's no way for her to know if they will have peace. Better to ask when she has a guarantee of it happening, like her perpetual wish machine.
Because of that, she doesn't want to associate the song with sadness, even if it reflects her darker thoughts. It's part of a place where she was so happy and had so many good things going in her life. She stubbornly and obstinantly refuses to let something from that time carry any bad connotations. She'd rather close her eyes when it plays and imagine she's driving back home, younger than she is and largely unburdened. If a Siren sang it at her, she wouldn't think of anything sinister, she'd want to feel good again and believe she could go back to Phoenix again.
Joshua has taken on that role as well, but he serves as the bright spot of her sanity. He helped pull her from captivity and sheer madness, but also helped her find a way to fight her madness. He's trained her in how to keep calm and what to do when she she feels like she's slipping in her sanity. Sadly, that means she's come to overrely on him and believe she can't manage without him, rather than acknowledging her own strength. It doesn't matter how often she does regain control, she wants the safety, support, and love Joshua gives her. It's yet to figure in her mind that she loves him and that's why she wants him around. Instead, her fear of self, fear of loneliness, and fear of being without him come in that form of need and overreliance.
